Women win elections: Fawcett at General Election 2024

14 June 2024

Women cannot be ignored at the upcoming election.

This election is critical for women’s rights, and we are determined to ensure that women’s voices and issues are at the heart of every party’s platform.

With nearly one quarter of all women polled undecided about their vote, political parties face a significant challenge. It's all to play for, and the parties must demonstrate their commitment to women's priorities at this election.

Our manifesto analysis shows that the Fawcett collective has made significant strides. Key priorities we've campaigned on for years are being discussed, and commitments are being made to enact change. However, much work remains, and only time will reveal if these discussions, debates, and promises will become reality.

The central Fawcett team and its members will continue fighting for real change that impacts all women's lives. It's clear that any party aiming to win must prioritise the issues that women care about.

Fawcett has three key focus areas leading up to this election, representing areas where government can make the most significant impact on women's lives.

Join Fawcett now to be part of the movement fighting for women’s rights this election.

Together, we can ensure women are the winners at this election.

1. Childcare reform

The UK’s worst kept secret is out: the childcare and early years education system is not fit-for-purpose. Our latest report, "Transforming Early Childhood Education and Care Pt.2", presents a comprehensive 10-point plan for viable reform. These changes aim to create a level playing field, empowering women from all backgrounds with better employment opportunities and greater life choices. The proposed reforms are designed to ensure that all children receive the high-quality care and education they deserve, laying a strong foundation for their future success.

Read more about Fawcett's calls for childcare reform.

2. Workplaces that work for women

Women continue to face structural barriers to workforce participation, with discrimination the norm for far too many. Fawcett research has shown that close to half of women in the workforce have experienced sexual harassment, and 75% of women of colour have experienced racism at work. This must change.

Read more about Fawcett's calls for workplaces that work for women.

3. Women's representation

As much as they can’t win without our votes, they also can’t win without our candidacies. Women must be represented on ballots at this election, and sitting in the next Parliament.

Read more about Fawcett's calls for women's equal representation at the election and in the next Parliament.

This election is a crucial time for campaigning on the issues that matter to us.

Fawcett will continue to fight for the reform we know will make a difference. In addition to our key focus areas, Fawcett calls on all parties to:

  • Make misogyny a hate crime
  • Protect reproductive rights

Without our members we simply wouldn’t have the funds or the voice to make real change and progress on key issues such as sex discrimination, the gender pay gap and women’s representation in public and political life.
